Cultured skin fibroblasts may be utilized for the diagnosis of cystinosis. Because of the increased time and costs, white blood cells are usually sent first. On rare occasions the expression of the defect in white cells is borderline for diagnosis. Confirmation using fibroblasts is definitive.
